Marmoleum Flooring from Forbo is one of the cleanest and most natural flooring materials available on the market. Forbo’s Marmoleum is made from an average of 97% natural raw materials, 72% of which are renewable and will grow back within 10 years.
At the heart of Forbo Marmoleum flooring is the flax plant from which we derive the key ingredient, linseed oil. The new Marmoleum Cocoa range goes one step further by adding a seventh natural ingredient, upcycled cocoa shells from a Dutch chocolate producer. Marmoleum is also made with recycled content to reduce the need for virgin raw material. At the end of its long life, Marmoleum is 100% biodegradable.
From how Forbo runs its factories to how they choose our ingredients, the way they make their floors is a big part of how they meet their mission to create better environments.
They use Life Cycle Assessment, an open and transparent methodology, to measure a products’ complete environmental performance. They’re committed to Green Design principles: to increasing efficiency, reducing the use of virgin raw materials and always searching for the most environmentally appropriate solution.
They reduce, reuse, recycle and renew. For example, they collect installation off-cuts and help repurpose end-of-life waste into new products. They make their flooring in clean, efficient factories, powered by 100% renewable electricity.
Forbo uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as the independent methodology of measuring their impact on the environment.
Standardized within ISO 14040, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is defined as a compilation and evaluation of the inputs and outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle, a cradle-to-grave-approach.
Measurement against the specific impact categories focuses on efforts for reduction; it is the basis for Forbo’s green development and our overall performance.
The LCA is calculated for 1m2 installed floor covering from cradle to installation. We base our LCA calculation on the weighted mass of all the products we produce and also include the energy consumption of all our offices and warehouse worldwide.
