On this week’s Episode of Fast Facts and Features, Jeanette of MYBC Consulting and Kevin of Ethical Flooring discuss renovations!

Everyone who has gone through a renovation knows that they can be a mix of both positive and negative emotions. There is the joy and excitement of transforming a tired space into something modern, clean and new. But despite what you see on TV, to complete a renovation takes more than a day! At times the noise, dust and disruption to your life can grow tiresome, especially on longer-term renovations.

With this in mind it is best to go into a renovation with a realistic time frame in mind. At Ethical Flooring we are always asked the question: “how long will it take?”. Unfortunately there is just not a standard answer available for this; every home is so very different.

In a typical renovation we first have to remove the existing flooring; this is most often old carpet, but it can be ceramic tile, hardwood, laminate or vinyl as well. After the existing flooring is removed we can get a good look at the sub-floor and asses its condition. In almost all circumstances we will have to do work to repair and/or flatten the sub-floor before we can install a new floor covering properly. This work is akin to repairing a wall before re-painting it. If the drywall has holes, scrapes and dings in it, it does you no good to just slap on another coat of paint. The same goes for new flooring; the condition of the sub-floor the new floor covering is installed on will ultimately play a big part in how well (or not) that new floor will perform over the long-term.

This phase of the installation process – sub-floor preparation – can take anywhere from 1 day to 1 week (or more) depending on the size of the project and the severity of the problem(s) being rectified. Make sure you budget this time into your scheduling.

Overall, we find that most new-flooring projects take from 1 to 2 weeks total to complete. This timeframe allows for all of the following steps to take place: removal of the exisiting flooring, assessing and repairing the sub-floor, installing the new floor covering, installing trim and transitions and finally, installing baseboards and/or door casings to finish of the space.
